What the configuration model changes

Tacton describes constraint-based configuration, multi-level BOM support, and comparison of configurations and quotes. These capabilities address requirements beyond a table of approved combinations. Its published product page is the source for the vendor column in the comparison; assess the model with your own engineering cases rather than assuming that every CPQ engine is interchangeable.

A narrower starting point with ReadyVariant

ReadyVariant begins with valid combinations already present in CSV or Excel, or the supported door matrix and rule files. You confirm the source mapping and rule interpretations, then check a known result before publishing. This can be a useful experiment when those source tables already capture your quoting decisions. It is not an automatic migration of a Tacton model.

Know when a table becomes the wrong model

If engineers must enumerate an impractical number of combinations or express relationships that the supported import cannot represent, stop and review the modeling approach. ReadyVariant’s preview does not include a general constraint solver, configurable assemblies, or a general bill-of-materials engine. Those requirements should guide your shortlist rather than being deferred until after data migration.

Test maintenance, not only a sales demonstration

Bring known valid and invalid cases, an option change, and a new price list to an evaluation. Ask who maintains the model and how changes are verified. Compare the scope and effort required for your actual workflow.
